2006-2007 Making a Difference Award Winners
These students have demonstrated leadership skills, a true caring for others, strong school involvement and an understanding of the importance of making a difference in the world around them:
November 14, 2006 - Jefferson School : Brook Tylka
Brook Tylka, a sixth grade student at Jefferson School, received the
Stevens Point
Kiwanis “Making a Difference Award” on November 14, 2006. The daughter of Joe and Vicki Tylka, Brook is active in orchestra, chorus, band, student council, as well as Girl Scouts. Her teacher, Betty Wright, said Brook "willingly works with all students" and has a "quietly effective leadership style." Wright also said that students realize she is an asset to a group and will select her as a partner because she brings out the best in others.
November 21, 2006 - McDill School : Ben Rodenkirch
Ben Rodenkirch, a sixth grade student at McDill School, received the
Stevens Point
Kiwanis “Making a Difference Award” on November 21, 2006. The son of Gerry and Carrie Rodenkirch, Ben is active in safety cadets, band, student council, as well as the school's recycling team. His science teacher, Jan Langston, said Ben always puts forth his best effort and is a positive role model for everyone at McDill in respect to his behavior towards others.
December 5, 2006 - McKinley Center: Taylor Peters
Taylor Peters, a sixth grade student from McKinley Center, received the Stevens Point Kiwanis "Making a Difference Award" on December 5, 2006. The daughter of Rachel Peters-Smola and James Smola, Taylor is active in safety cadets, student council, band, chorus, orchestra and sports, and volunteers in school and in church. The award was presented by McKinley principal John Blader, who said Taylor was chosen in recognition of the "immense impact her dedication to school, family and self has made."
