These students have demonstrated leadership skills, a true caring for others, strong school involvement and an understanding of the importance of making a difference in the world around them:
November 6, 2007 - Jefferson School of the Arts: Afton Wierzba
Afton Wierzba, a sixth grade student at Jefferson School of the Arts, received the

Kiwanis “Making a Difference Award” on November 6, 2007. Afton, the daughter of Gary and Angela Wierzba, was joined by her parents and Jefferson principal Dave Lockett at the award luncheon. “This sixth grader is someone really special,” said Lockett. “She is always willing to pitch in and help…and if you need something done well, you can count on

November 20, 2007 - McDill Academies : Mikayla Landowski
Mikayla Landowski, a sixth grade student from McDill Academies, received the Stevens Point Kiwanis "Making a Difference Award" on November 20, 2007. Mikayla, the daughter of Michael and Kathy Landowski, was joined by her mother and McDill Academies teacher Jan Langton at the award luncheon. “Mikayla is a remarkable person,” Langton said. “She is a bright and able student academically, always putting forth her best effort. She is a positive role model to all of us in respect to her behavior towards others,” she added.
December 4, 2007 - McKinley Center : Nina Horvath
Nina Horvath, a sixth grade student from McDill Center, received the Stevens Point Kiwanis "Making a Difference Award" on December 4, 2007. Nina, the daughter of Stephen and Justine Horvath, was joined by her father and

principal Dr. John Blader at the award luncheon. “Nina is one of McKinley’s shining stars and is looked at as a leader by her peers,” Blader said. “She serves as cadet squad captain, president of student council and is always positive and helpful in the classroom,” he added.
January 22, 2008 - Plover-Whiting School : Mattie Jankowski
Mattie Jankowski, a sixth grade student at Plover-Whiting Elementary, received the

who displays a positive attitude toward her classmates and school,” Coffman said. “Mattie is hard working, courteous and conscientious and is well-liked by her peers and teachers because of these attributes,” he added.
February 19, 2008 - Roosevelt Elementary School : Heidi Jascor
Heidi Jascor, a sixth grade student at Roosevelt Elementary, received the Stevens Point Kiwanis “Making a Difference Award” on February 19, 2008. Heidi, the daughter of Craig and Barbara Jascor of Plover, was joined by her parents, and

March 11, 2008 - Washington Service Learning Center : Connor Cook
Connor Cook, a sixth grade student at Washington Service Learning Center, received the Stevens Point Kiwanis "Making a Difference Award" on March 11, 2008. Connor, the son of Perry and Jean Cook, Stevens Point, was joined by his parents, and Washington Elementary principal Bill Carlson, at the award luncheon. “Connor is a wonderful young man,” Carlson said. “He willingly volunteers for any task and has held many leadership roles at Washington, including cadets, student council, school store and the Junior Optimist Club. Connor is organized, considerate of others and dedicated to leading by example,” he added.
April 1, 2008 - Kennedy Elementary School : Jerney Simkowski
Jerney Simkowski, a sixth grade student at Kennedy School, received the Stevens Point Kiwanis "Making a Difference Award" on April 1, 2008. Jerney, the son of Dennis and Marg Simkowski, Junction City, was joined by his mom, his sister, grandparents Leonard and Shirley Simkowski and Kennedy Elementary teacher Joan Curti, at the award luncheon. “Jerney models quite leadership and excellence at Kennedy Elementary,” Curti said. “He is always respectful to peers and staff, serves as a positive role model for all students, displays a humble demeanor and is very dependable on his obligations,” she added.
April 8, 2008 - St. Peter Middle School : Hannah Champion
Hannah Champion, a sixth grade student at St. Peter Middle School, received the Stevens Point Kiwanis "Making a Difference Award" on April 8, 2008. Hannah, the daughter of Michael Champion and Susan Mueller, Stevens Point, was joined by her parents and St. Peter Middle School teacher Paula Marciniak at the award luncheon. “Hannah was selected to receive this award because of her positive attitude and the excellent role model she is for her fellow students,” Marciniak said. “Hannah is an active member of student council, other extra curricular activities at school and also active in her community,” she added.
April 22, 2008 - Madison Elementary School : Janessa Lepak
Janessa Lepak, a sixth grade student at Madison School, received the Stevens Point Kiwanis "Making A Difference Award" on April 22, 2008. Janessa, the daughter of Tim and Michelle Lepak, Mosinee, was joined by her mother, Madison Elementary teacher Marlene McLarnan and principal Mary Jo Lechner at the award luncheon. “Janessa is a hard working, studious young lady who puts much effort into whatever she is focusing on,” Lechner said. “When something needs to get done, Janessa is willing to complete it without hesitation,” she added.
April 29, 2008 - St. Paul's School : Allison Krugler
Alli Krugler, a sixth grade student at St. Paul's School received the Stevens Point Kiwanis "Making a Difference Award" on April 29, 2008. Alli, the daughter of Steve and Stacy Krugler, Junction City, was joined by her parents, and St. Paul Lutheran principal Bill Zuelsdorff at the award luncheon. “Alli is a hard working, high honor roll student who is recognized by her teachers at ‘top-notch’,” Zuelsdorff said. “Alli is a super helper with other students and exhibits a positive attitude in all that she does,” he added.
May 13, 2008 - Bannach Elementary School: Riely Held
Riely Held, a sixth grade student at Bannach Elementary School received the Stevens Point Kiwanis "Making a Difference Award" on May 13, 2008. Riely, the daughter of Mick and Lywanda Held,
Stevens Point, was joined by her parents and Bannach principal John Zellmer at the award luncheon. "Riely has been a positive role model at Bannach, is conscientious, hard-working, and always willing to help in any way." Zellmer said. "Riely is continually focused on other students and doing what is right," he added.
